2009 was a brilliant year for The Kart Shoppe, South Africa’s
agent for Birel karts as it claimed four major titles leaving owners Neil
Curtis and Leeroy Poulter well satisfied.
Bedfordview’s Aston Hare stylishly dominated the junior classes as he backed
up his Junior Rok national title by winning the Rotax Junior Max crown the
following month.
Despite being one of the youngest drivers in his class, Midrand’s Sean Frost
did a brilliant job in claiming the Senior Rotax Max title. Making his
performance even more noteworthy is the fact that it was his first attempt
since leaving the junior ranks last year.
Having won three races during the season, Johannesburg’s Ian Young took the
Super Rok championship after the national court of appeal ruled in his
favour against a penalty incurred at the final round.
There was more reason for celebration in the Birel camp when Nicholas
Surguladze made it a Birel 1-2 in the Junior Rok standings and then Raoul
Owens did the same to give Birel a clear edge in the Junior Max class.
The Northern Regions Championships are often regarded as being almost as
competitive as the National championship categories.
Birel was once again the chassis to beat as Deon Auby astounded everyone in
his comeback to karting as he won the 125cc GP crown. Runner-up was Len
Talken (PCR) who spoilt what would have been an unprecedented Birel
whitewash as Allan Thompson, Cint Jones, Marius Swanepoel, Rob Bakewell,
Mitch Coetzee, Laurence Jones, Phillip Swanepoel filled the next positions
to make it no less than eight Birel drivers in the top ten.
In the regional Mini Max championship Dewald Brummer came out on top while
Castrol Toyota Development driver Morgan McColl was second.
Shaun Frost added the regional Senior Max title trophy to his bulging
cabinet while Ridgway was third ahead of fellow Birel pilot Devon Tame.
Fabienne Lanz, daughter of former saloon car ace Peter Lanz won the regional
Super Rok crown while the ever consistent George dos Ramos wrapped up the
regional DD2 Masters title.
