SOWETO RACE REPORT
History was made recently when the first ever MSA sanctioned race meeting was held in
Soweto.
The Northern
Regions Kart Club in
conjunction with Loxion
Motorshow hosted a Kart
Festival in the parking lot
of the Billion Rand
Maponya Mall shopping
complex on Saturday 27th
June.
The event sponsors,
STROCAM and Daily
Sun helped host a
successful event that saw
64 karters take to a 914
Meter circuit constructed
with 2100 straw bales
and 767 meters of crowd control fencing.
Top International karters were heard saying that the course is a tough one and it tested
even the best of drivers. As none of the competitors had sight of the circuit prior to
Saturday’s event, it was a test of true driving talent that saw the best rise to the top.
The racing was similar to a
Monaco type circuit leaving
very little room for error and
forcing some decisive
overtaking manoeuvres to be
made. The crowds, most of
whom had never seen
motoracing before were
shouting and whistling with
excitement, while some just
stood with jaws wide open in
disbelief at the spectacle on
view.
The results of the day
produced some worthy
winners and many competitors asking when and were the next “Street Race” will be held.
The sponsor’s contribution to the event helped
the club leave a charitable legacy, with the
donation of the 2100 straw bales to the local
PDSA (Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals)
and SPCA (Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals) Community Outreach
Programmes.
These bales would see no additional feed
required for the entire winter season.
“This will be used to feed our sick and injured
horses and donkey's at the hospital at Mofolo
as well as being distributed to the cart animals
that come into our facility to be shod and treated” said Marilyn Eaton, Administrator
PDSA.
STROCAM, Daily Sun and the NRKC would firstly like to thank all those who worked
tirelessly to prepare the circuit, secondly, to all the competitors who entered and
contributed to this remarkable event and lastly to all the supporters who helped make this
event a success.
